Every box has every feature, so the hard part is picking the box

MikroTik does not tier its software. BGP, OSPF, MPLS, VLANs, firewall, VPN, queueing and hotspot are in a desktop hEX and in a 100G Cloud Core Router alike, with no feature licences per device and nothing held back for a higher edition. The trade-off is stated honestly: you configure it yourself, and in return nothing sits behind a subscription.

The difficulty is the catalogue. Model numbers encode port count, uplink type, power option and form factor into a single string, so a name like CRS354-48G-4S+2Q+RM tells you everything and reads like nothing. Two devices that look similar on a shelf can differ in whether switching happens in hardware or in software, which is the difference between wire speed and a bottleneck. Choosing on the model name rather than the specification is where most MikroTik mistakes are made.

That is the part we help with: reading the model string, checking whether switching is hardware offloaded for what you are actually doing, and telling you which board fits.
