Overview

The Aruba 2530 Switch Series provides reliable and secure Layer 2 access connectivity for enterprises, branch offices and small and midsize businesses, and HPE builds its 8-port models compact and fanless for quiet work spaces. The J9774A is the 8-port Gigabit PoE+ member of that compact line: silent, small enough for a desk, wall or surface mount, and able to power a handful of edge devices without a wiring closet. It runs from an external power adapter, for which HPE listed a rear-mounted adapter shelf (J9820A), and its two dual-personality uplinks let each site choose copper or fiber.

Technical Details

The HPE Aruba Networking 2530 J9774A is the Aruba 2530 8G PoE+ Switch, a Layer 2 managed compact fanless switch with 8 Gigabit (10/100/1000) PoE+ ports and two dual-personality uplinks, each usable as an RJ-45 Gigabit port or an SFP slot. Switching capacity is 20 Gbps and forwarding rate is 14.8 Mpps. The PoE+ budget is 67 W, the total available to all PoE ports, with up to 30 W per port. It powers access points, IP phones and IP cameras in offices, conference rooms and small branches.

Best For

The J9774A suits small offices, conference rooms and remote sites that need managed Gigabit access and PoE+ for a few devices, in places where fan noise matters. A 67 W PoE+ budget is suitable for a small mix of access points, IP phones or IP cameras; actual device counts depend on each powered device's power draw.

Not suitable if:

  • you need more than 8 access ports, since this compact model has 8
  • you need more than 67 W of total PoE power, since that is this model's full PoE budget
  • you need 10G uplinks, since the dual-personality uplinks are Gigabit
  • you need IP routing, since the 2530 QuickSpecs list Layer 2 switching only

FAQ

Does the HPE Aruba Networking 2530 J9774A support PoE, and how much power does it provide?

Yes. The HPE Aruba Networking 2530 J9774A provides IEEE 802.3at PoE+ on all 8 Gigabit access ports, up to 30 W per port, and also powers IEEE 802.3af and pre-standard PoE devices. Its PoE power budget is 67 W, which HPE defines as the total power budget available to all PoE ports, so two devices at the full 30 W already use most of it; plan device counts from each device's actual draw.

What uplinks and transceivers does the J9774A use?

The J9774A has two dual-personality uplink ports. Each can be used either as an RJ-45 10/100/1000 port or as an SFP slot for a Gigabit transceiver. The SFP personality is Gigabit, so 10G SFP+ optics are not supported. HPE states that the J8177C Gigabit copper mini-GBIC is not supported on dual-personality ports, so use the built-in RJ-45 personality for a copper uplink. HPE also requires SFPs of revision B or later. Confirm specific fiber optics against HPE's transceiver compatibility documentation. Transceivers are sold separately.

Is the J9774A fanless, and how can it be mounted?

Yes. HPE lists the 2530 8-port models as compact and fanless, and the J9774A's acoustic rating is 0 dB, which suits offices, classrooms and conference rooms. It is 10.00 in wide and 6.28 in deep and can be mounted in a 19-inch rack with a rack-mounting kit, on a wall, or on a horizontal surface. It uses an external power adapter; HPE listed an 8-port power adapter shelf (J9820A) that mounts on the back of the switch to hold it.

Can the J9774A be stacked?

No. The J9774A does not stack: the Aruba 2530 QuickSpecs list no hardware stacking technology, stacking ports, stack bandwidth or member limit, so several J9774A switches cannot operate as one logical switch. The related feature HPE lists is Virtual Stacking, which provides single IP address management for up to 16 switches while each switch is still configured individually. For resilient links between switches the QuickSpecs list LACP trunking of up to eight links per trunk, IEEE 802.1s Multiple Spanning Tree and SmartLink.

What is the difference between the J9774A and the J9777A?

The J9774A and the J9777A are closely matched compact, fanless 8-port Gigabit 2530 switches with two dual-personality uplinks, 20 Gbps switching capacity and a 14.8 Mpps forwarding rate. Differences documented by HPE include PoE, accessories and weight: the J9774A adds IEEE 802.3at PoE+ with a 67 W budget, while the J9777A is data-only. HPE listed its 8-port power adapter shelf and its 1U cable guard for the J9774A but not for the J9777A, and the J9774A weighs 2.2 lb against 2.0 lb for the J9777A.

How is the J9774A managed?

The J9774A is a fully managed switch. HPE lists a command-line interface, a web browser GUI, a configuration menu, SNMPv1/v2c/v3, Intelligent Management Center and out-of-band management through an RJ-45 or USB micro-B serial console port. It can also be managed on-premises with Aruba AirWave, which supports Zero-Touch Provisioning through a DHCP-based process, or from the cloud with Aruba Central. HPE also listed a Central Managed ordering version, J9774ACM, for the U.S. and Canada only; that version required an active Aruba Central license.

Is the J9774A end of sale?

Yes. HPE announced the end of sale of the J9774A on April 30, 2021 in its notice "2530 8 port Gigabit Switch End of Sale (Rev-4)", with an End of Sale date of May 8, 2022. HPE named the Aruba 6000 12G CL4 2SFP 139W Switch (R8N89A) as the replacement. HPE later announced the end of sale of R8N89A itself, effective March 31, 2026, and named R8N89B (HPE Aruba Networking CX 6000 12G Class4 PoE 2G/2SFP 139W) as its replacement.

What condition is the J9774A sold in, and what warranty applies?

The J9774A is sold new and factory-sealed. It is covered by the Network Devices Inc. 1-year warranty and a 30-day return policy.
