Overview

The HPE Networking Instant On 1830 Series is HPE's line of entry-level, smart-managed Layer 2 Gigabit switches for small and medium businesses, set up and run from the Instant On mobile app, the cloud portal or a local web GUI. The JL813A is the 24-port PoE model: ports 1-12 supply Class 4 PoE, the other 12 carry data only, and two dedicated 1G SFP ports provide fiber uplinks. That half-PoE layout fits sites that power a handful of access points, cameras or phones alongside wired desktops and printers. Unlike the fanless data-only JL812A, it is cooled by variable-speed fans.

Technical Details

HPE Networking Instant On 1830 JL813A is a Layer 2 smart-managed 1U rackmount switch with 24 Gigabit Ethernet ports, 12 of them Class 4 PoE, and two fixed 1G SFP uplinks. It is managed through the Instant On mobile app, the Instant On cloud portal or a local web GUI. Switching capacity is 52 Gbps and forwarding rate is 38.68 Mpps. The PoE budget is 195 W from the single internal power supply, shared by ports 1-12 at up to 30 W per port, so the budget rather than the port count sets how many devices draw full power. It powers access points, IP cameras and VoIP phones in small offices, retail stores and smart spaces.

Best For

The JL813A suits small offices, retail stores and smart spaces that power a modest number of access points, IP cameras or VoIP phones next to data-only endpoints, managed from the Instant On app or cloud portal. A 195 W PoE budget is suitable for mixed deployments of access points, cameras and phones; actual device counts depend on each powered device's power draw. Two 1G SFP ports link it back to the network core.

Not suitable if:

  • you want all 24 access ports to supply power, since only ports 1-12 supply PoE
  • you need more than 195 W of total PoE, since that is the budget of the single internal power supply and HPE lists no second supply
  • you need 10G uplinks, because the two SFP ports are 1G only
  • you need routing between VLANs on the switch itself, because HPE documents the 1830 series as Layer 2 with no IP routing feature
  • you need a fanless switch for a silent room, since this model is cooled by variable-speed fans

FAQ

Does the HPE Networking Instant On 1830 JL813A support PoE, and what is the budget?

Yes. The HPE Networking Instant On 1830 JL813A supplies Class 4 PoE (IEEE 802.3at) on ports 1-12 of its 24 Gigabit ports, at up to 30 W per port, from a 195 W total budget. The budget comes from the switch's single internal power supply and HPE lists no second supply, so 195 W is the ceiling. Twelve ports at 30 W would need 360 W, so how many devices run at full power depends on each device's actual draw. Ports 13-24 and the two SFP ports supply no power.

What transceivers do the uplinks on the 1830 JL813A use?

The JL813A has two fixed 1G SFP ports. They are 1-Gigabit SFP slots and do not support 10G SFP+ optics. For the 24- and 48-port 1830 models HPE lists three Instant On transceivers: 1G SFP LC SX (500 m, multimode), 1G LX SFP LC (10 km, single-mode) and 1G SFP RJ45 (100 m, Cat5e). Confirm current compatibility in the HPE Networking Instant On Transceiver Guide. Transceivers are sold separately.

How is the Instant On 1830 JL813A managed?

The JL813A is a smart-managed switch. HPE lists three ways to manage it: the Instant On mobile app, the Instant On cloud portal, and a local web GUI that supports up to five HTTP and HTTPS sessions. SNMPv1 and v2c are supported read-only for monitoring, and firmware updates can be scheduled from the app or the cloud portal. A few tools, including remote syslog, the cable diagnostic tool and the support file, are available only through the local web interface.

Can the Instant On 1830 JL813A be stacked?

No. HPE lists no stacking capability for the Instant On 1830 series, so each JL813A operates as a standalone switch. Several Instant On switches can be managed together as one site in the Instant On cloud portal or mobile app, and link aggregation (LACP or manual) bundles up to eight ports per trunk for higher-bandwidth links between switches. Spanning Tree protects redundant links against loops.

Does the Instant On 1830 JL813A route between VLANs?

No. HPE describes the Instant On 1830 series as offering Layer 2 switching capabilities and lists no IP routing feature for it, so traffic between VLANs on the JL813A must be routed by an upstream router or Layer 3 switch. The 1830 supports up to 64 VLANs for segmenting traffic. HPE's Instant On 1930 and 1960 series list static routing.

What is the difference between the 1830 JL813A and the JL812A?

The JL813A and JL812A are closely matched 24-port Instant On 1830 switches with two 1G SFP ports, 52 Gbps switching capacity and 38.68 Mpps forwarding. Differences documented by HPE include these: the JL813A supplies Class 4 PoE on ports 1-12 from a 195 W budget while the JL812A has no PoE; the JL813A uses variable-speed fans while the JL812A is fanless; and the JL813A is deeper (25.3 cm against 21.59 cm) and heavier (7.65 lb against 5.50 lb). Choose the JL813A when you need to power devices from the switch.

How does the 1830 JL813A compare with the 48-port JL815A?

Both are Instant On 1830 PoE switches with Class 4 PoE on half of their copper ports and 1G SFP uplinks. The JL815A doubles the scale: 48 Gigabit ports with PoE on ports 1-24, four 1G SFP ports, a 370 W budget, 104 Gbps switching capacity and 77.37 Mpps forwarding, against the JL813A's 24 ports, PoE on ports 1-12, two SFP ports, 195 W, 52 Gbps and 38.68 Mpps. Choose the JL815A for larger sites with more powered devices.

What condition is the JL813A sold in, and what warranty applies?

The JL813A is sold new and factory-sealed. It is covered by the Network Devices Inc. 1-year warranty and a 30-day return policy.
