Overview

The HPE Networking Instant On 1960 Series is a family of smart-managed Layer 2+ stackable switches for small and growing businesses, set up and managed through the Instant On mobile app, the cloud-based web portal, or a local web GUI. The JL809A is the 48-port PoE access model, with the most PoE ports and the highest PoE budget in the series. Its eight Class 6 ports target higher-draw devices such as pan-tilt-zoom cameras and video-enabled IP phones, while the 40 Class 4 ports cover access points and VoIP phones across a larger floor, and Instant On automatically gives Instant On access points the highest PoE priority. Its chassis is deeper than the other 1960 models, which matters when planning rack or cabinet space.

Technical Details

The HPE Networking Instant On 1960 JL809A is a Layer 2+ smart-managed 1U rackmount PoE switch with 48 Gigabit Ethernet ports, two 1G/10G SFP+ uplink ports, and two 100/1000/10GBASE-T uplink ports. Its internal power supply provides a 600 W total PoE budget, of which up to 480 W can go to Class 6; eight ports deliver 802.3bt Class 6 at up to 60 W and the other 40 deliver 802.3at Class 4 at up to 30 W. Switching capacity is 176 Gbps and forwarding rate is 131 Mpps. It supports True Stacking of up to four 1960 switches, with 80 Gbps of stacking capacity per the data sheet. It powers access points, IP phones, and IP cameras.

Best For

The JL809A suits small-business access closets that power many wireless access points, IP phones, and IP cameras over 48 Gigabit ports. A 600 W PoE budget is suitable for denser mixed deployments of Class 4 and Class 6 powered devices, with up to 480 W available to the eight Class 6 ports; actual device counts depend on each powered device's power draw.

Not suitable if:

  • you need Class 6 power on more than eight ports, since only eight ports support Class 6 and Class 6 delivery is capped at 480 W
  • you need more than 600 W of PoE in one switch, since the internal power supply sets a fixed 600 W budget
  • you need dynamic routing such as OSPF or BGP, since the 1960 Series supports static routing only
  • you need a fanless switch for a silent space, since this model uses variable-speed fans

FAQ

How much PoE does the HPE Networking Instant On 1960 JL809A provide?

The HPE Networking Instant On 1960 JL809A provides a 600 W total PoE budget from its internal power supply, and up to 480 W of that can be delivered as Class 6 power. Eight ports support IEEE 802.3bt Class 6 at up to 60 W per port for devices such as pan-tilt-zoom cameras and video-enabled IP phones. The other 40 ports support IEEE 802.3at Class 4 at up to 30 W per port for access points, IP phones, and surveillance cameras. Because the budget is shared, the number of devices powered at full draw depends on each device's needs. HPE lists no second power supply option.

What transceivers do the uplinks on the JL809A use?

The JL809A has two SFP+ uplink ports that take 1G SFP or 10G SFP+ transceivers and 10G SFP+ direct-attach copper cables; they do not support 25G or faster optics. Its two 10GBASE-T uplink ports are RJ-45 copper ports running at 100M, 1G, or 10G and need no transceiver. HPE's QuickSpecs and data sheet list different supported transceiver and DAC part numbers for the 1960 Series, so check the HPE Networking Instant On Transceiver Guide for the current list. Transceivers are sold separately.

How many switches can be stacked with the JL809A?

Up to four. The JL809A supports True Stacking, which combines up to four HPE Networking Instant On 1960 switches into one logical unit managed through a single management IP address, in a ring or chain topology. Access and aggregation models can be mixed in the same stack, so the JL809A can stack with other 1960 access switches and with the JL805A aggregation switch. The data sheet lists 80 Gbps of maximum stacking capacity. Stack links can use Cat 6A copper, fiber, or DAC cables, and a stack can be formed locally or through cloud-managed stacking in the Instant On app and portal.

What is the difference between the JL809A and the JL807A?

The JL809A and JL807A are both Instant On 1960 PoE access switches with two SFP+ and two 10GBASE-T uplinks and True Stacking. The JL809A has 48 Gigabit ports (eight Class 6, 40 Class 4), a 600 W budget with up to 480 W for Class 6, 176 Gbps of switching capacity, and 131 Mpps. The JL807A has 24 Gigabit ports (four Class 6, 20 Class 4), a 370 W budget with up to 240 W for Class 6, 128 Gbps, and 95 Mpps. The JL809A chassis is deeper, 40.275 cm versus 35.05 cm, and the two can share one True Stacking group.

How is the JL809A managed?

The JL809A is a smart-managed switch. It can be set up, monitored, and managed through the Instant On mobile app, the cloud-based web portal, or a local web GUI that supports up to five HTTP and HTTPS sessions, and it can be monitored by an SNMP manager using SNMPv1, v2c, and v3. Some features, including MSTP, IPv6 configuration, remote syslog, RMON, and the cable diagnostic tool, are available through the local web GUI only. A pull-out luggage tag with a QR code on the front panel speeds onboarding through the mobile app.

What condition is the JL809A sold in, and what warranty applies?

The JL809A is sold new and factory-sealed. It is covered by the Network Devices Inc. 1-year warranty and a 30-day return policy.
