HPE Aruba Networking CX 6200F JL728A 48-Port PoE+ Switch with 4x 1G/10G SFP+, 740 W PoE
- Managed, Rack-mountable, 48 x 1G ports, Fixed Uplinks (4 x SFP+), PoE+ (740W), Layer 2
Overview
The HPE Aruba Networking CX 6200 Switch Series is a family of stackable access switches for enterprise campus and branch wired access and SMB networks, built on the HPE Aruba Networking Gen7 ASIC and the HPE Aruba Networking CX Switch Operating System. The JL728A is the 48-port 740 W Class 4 PoE+ model of the fixed CX 6200F line, which HPE listed as the HPE Aruba Networking CX 6200F 48G Class4 PoE 4SFP+ 740W Switch; it has a fixed power supply and fixed fans, where the modular CX 6200M uses hot-swappable power supplies and field-replaceable fans. This A-suffix model includes a Bluetooth adapter for setup through the HPE Aruba Networking CX Mobile App and provides a USB-C console port, and HPE's QuickSpecs list its uplinks as 1/10G. Routing is Layer 2+ access routing (static and access OSPF), and the optional term-based CX Advanced Feature Pack, supported from CX-OS 10.18, unlocks visibility and advanced security use cases without adding routing.
Technical Details
The HPE Aruba Networking CX 6200F JL728A is a Layer 2+ managed 1U rackmount switch with 48 10/100/1000BASE-T ports and four fixed 1G/10G SFP+ uplinks, running AOS-CX. Switching capacity is 176 Gbps and forwarding rate is 130.9 Mpps. It supplies IEEE 802.3at Class 4 PoE+ at up to 30 W per port from a 740 W PoE budget on its fixed power supply, so the budget limits how many ports draw the full 30 W at once. It supports Virtual Switching Framework (VSF) stacking of up to 8 members over its 10G SFP ports. It powers and connects wireless access points, IP phones, IP cameras and wired IoT devices at the campus or branch access layer.
Best For
The JL728A suits campus and branch wiring closets that power wireless access points, IP phones and IP cameras alongside desktops and wired IoT devices. A 740 W PoE budget is suitable for mixed deployments of these powered devices; actual device counts depend on each powered device's power draw. Its four 1G/10G SFP+ uplinks connect to the distribution layer.
Not suitable if:
- you need 60 W (Class 6) PoE on a port, since this switch delivers up to 30 W Class 4 PoE+ per port
- you need BGP or multi-area OSPF, since unicast routing on this switch is limited to static routes, RIP/RIPng and single-area OSPF
- you need uplinks faster than 10G, since the four SFP+ uplinks top out at 10G
- you need 2.5G or 5G multigigabit access ports, since the access ports are 10/100/1000BASE-T
- you need redundant or hot-swappable power supplies, since this switch has a fixed power supply

FAQ
Does the HPE Aruba Networking CX 6200F JL728A support PoE, and how much?
Yes. The HPE Aruba Networking CX 6200F JL728A supplies IEEE 802.3at Class 4 PoE+ at up to 30 W per port on all 48 access ports and also supports IEEE 802.3af and pre-standard powered devices. Power comes from a 740 W PoE budget on the switch's fixed power supply; there is no second power supply to raise it, so the budget limits how many ports draw the full 30 W at once. Always-on PoE keeps powered devices running during scheduled reboots and firmware upgrades.
What transceivers do the JL728A uplinks use?
The JL728A has four fixed SFP+ uplink ports that HPE's QuickSpecs list as 1/10G, so they take 1G SFP and 10G SFP+ optics and 10G direct-attach cables; they do not support 25G optics. One footnote restricts this: HPE lists the 10G SFP+ LRM transceiver as natively supported only on the modular CX 6200M, not on the CX 6200F. Unsupported Transceiver Mode can enable non-HPE 1G and 10G optics, but HPE does not support the transceiver or cable when that mode is used. Check the CX 6200 QuickSpecs transceiver list. Transceivers are sold separately.
How many JL728A switches can you stack?
Up to 8. The JL728A supports Virtual Switching Framework (VSF) stacking of up to 8 members in a chain or ring over its 10G SFP ports (the QuickSpecs publish no stacking-bandwidth figure for this model), and the members are managed as a single chassis. Stacks can span up to 10 km with long-range transceivers. HPE allows 24- and 48-port fixed and modular CX 6200 models to be mixed in one stack, while the 12-port CX 6200F model has no stacking support with 24- or 48-port CX 6200F or CX 6200M switches.
How does the JL728A differ from the JL728B?
Both have 48 access ports, 176 Gbps switching, 130.9 Mpps forwarding and a 740 W PoE budget. Differences documented by HPE include: the JL728B lists its uplinks as 100M/1G/10G and adds an RJ-45 console port, while the JL728A includes a Bluetooth adapter; the JL728A is 32.7 cm deep and weighs 5.10 kg, against 32.66 cm and 5.13 kg; the packet buffer is 8 MB against 6 MB, and 1 Gbps latency is 2.28 µs against 3.3 µs; HPE publishes 40 Gbps stacking bandwidth for the JL728B but no figure for the JL728A.
Does the JL728A need a license or subscription to operate?
No. The JL728A comes with the base AOS-CX feature set, including Layer 2 switching, VSF stacking and Layer 2+ routing with static routes, RIP/RIPng, single-area OSPFv2/OSPFv3 and ECMP. HPE listed an optional, term-based CX Advanced Feature Pack, supported from CX-OS 10.18, that unlocks visibility and advanced security use cases; application-based policy is one feature that requires it. The pack adds no routing capability and is not needed to operate the switch. HPE Aruba Central cloud or on-premises management was offered separately as a subscription.
Is the JL728A end of sale?
HPE has announced the end of sale of the JL728A in its 6200F End of Sale Announcement (Rev-2). The End of Sale date is June 30, 2027 worldwide excluding Europe, the Middle East and Africa, or while supplies last, and January 31, 2025 in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. End of Support Life is December 31, 2033, which HPE says will be updated to match the CX 6200F replacement's date if that is later. HPE's recommended replacement is the HPE Aruba Networking CX 6200F 48G Class 4 PoE 4SFP+ 740W Switch (JL728B), with alternatives S0M85A (4SFP, 1G uplinks), S0M90A (4SFP+ TAA) and S0G17A (4SFP TAA), and HPE states the CX 6200F products are fully interoperable with the Aruba 6200F products.
What condition is the JL728A sold in, and what warranty applies?
The JL728A is sold new and factory-sealed. It is covered by the Network Devices Inc. 1-year warranty and a 30-day return policy.
