Overview
The HPE Aruba Networking CX 6300 Switch Series is a family of stackable Layer 3 switches for enterprise network access, aggregation and core, built on HPE's Gen7 ASIC architecture and the microservices-based AOS-CX operating system, with full dynamic routing and EVPN-VXLAN support in the base software. The JL660A is the 24-port HPE Smart Rate configuration of the CX 6300M: every access port negotiates up to 5GbE and carries Class 6 PoE, for multigigabit wireless access points in smaller closets. As a CX 6300M model it has two rear slots for hot-swappable power supplies and field-replaceable fan trays, so power can be made redundant and serviced in place. It ships with one of its two fan trays installed.
Technical Details
The HPE Aruba Networking CX 6300M JL660A is a Layer 3 managed 1U rackmount switch with 24 HPE Smart Rate 100M/1G/2.5G/5G ports (100M full-duplex only) and 4x 1G/10G/25G/50G SFP56 uplinks, running AOS-CX. Switching capacity is 640 Gbps and the forwarding rate is 476 Mpps. Each port supports 802.3bt Class 6 PoE up to 60 W; the PoE budget is up to 1440 W with a 1600 W power supply and lower with the smaller supplies, and no supply is included. It supports VSF stacking of up to 10 members with 200 Gbps of stacking bandwidth. It connects high-speed wireless access points, IP cameras and multigigabit endpoints in campus and branch closets.
Best For
The JL660A suits smaller campus and branch closets with multigigabit wireless access points and high-power powered devices. A PoE budget of up to 1440 W (with a 1600 W supply) is suitable for mixed deployments of access points, IP cameras and IP phones; actual device counts depend on each powered device's power draw and on the supply installed. Four SFP56 uplinks and 10-member VSF stacking carry traffic to the distribution layer.
Not suitable if:
- you need more than 24 access ports in one unit, since this model has 24 Smart Rate ports
- you need 10GBASE-T access ports, since these Smart Rate ports top out at 5GbE
- you need 90 W Class 8 PoE per port, since these ports are rated Class 6 at up to 60 W
- you need the switch to ship ready to power on, because the power supply is ordered separately

FAQ
How much PoE does the HPE Aruba Networking CX 6300M JL660A provide?
The HPE Aruba Networking CX 6300M JL660A supports IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at and 802.3bt PoE up to 60 W per port (Class 6) on its 24 Smart Rate ports. The total budget depends on the power supply, which is ordered separately. With a single supply it is 370 W (JL086A), 740 W (JL087A) or 1440 W (JL670A), so the full 1440 W needs the 1600 W JL670A. The budget is shared, so the number of ports drawing full power depends on each device's draw.
What transceivers do the uplinks on the JL660A use?
The JL660A has four SFP56 uplink ports rated 1G/10G/25G/50G. HPE's footnote states that the 50G capability is for use with 50G DACs for both interconnect and VSF stacking, and 100 Mb transceivers are not supported in any SFP56 port. The 24 Smart Rate access ports are RJ-45 copper and take no pluggable optics. Check optic and DAC compatibility against HPE's CX 6300 QuickSpecs transceiver list. Transceivers are sold separately.
How many JL660A switches can be stacked?
Up to 10. The JL660A supports HPE Aruba Networking Virtual Switching Framework (VSF) stacking of up to 10 members in a chain or ring, with 200 Gbps of stacking bandwidth (400 Gbps at full duplex). VSF stacking is not supported on 1G ports. HPE allows modular CX 6300M and fixed CX 6300F models in the same stack, but the Layer 2-only CX 6300L models do not stack with them. As an alternative to a stack, two switches can form a Virtual Switching Extension (VSX) cluster.
What is the difference between the JL660A and the JL659A?
Both are CX 6300M switches with HPE Smart Rate 100M/1G/2.5G/5G ports, Class 6 PoE up to 60 W per port, four SFP56 uplinks and the same power-supply options. The JL660A has 24 ports, 640 Gbps and 476 Mpps, a PoE budget of up to 1440 W, and ships with one fan tray. The JL659A has 48 ports, 880 Gbps and 654 Mpps, a PoE budget of up to 2880 W with two 1600 W supplies, and ships with both fan trays. Choose by port count and PoE headroom.
Does the JL660A need a license or subscription to operate?
No. The JL660A runs AOS-CX with all base features included, among them BGP, OSPF, RIP, VRRP, PIM, VXLAN and EVPN. HPE offers an optional, term-based CX Advanced Feature Pack that adds application-based and reflexive policies, MACsec extensions for the WAN and Drop Exceptions; it adds no routing capability. HPE Aruba Networking Central is a separate, optional management subscription, and HPE states that a Central Advanced subscription also enables the Advanced Feature Pack features.
Does the JL660A come with a power supply?
No. The JL660A has two field-replaceable, hot-swappable power-supply slots, and at least one power supply is required and ordered separately. Supported supplies are the JL086A (680 W), JL087A (1050 W) and JL670A (1600 W), and the PoE budget depends on which one is installed. One fan tray comes installed; a second tray is ordered separately and is required for HPE's 55 °C (131 °F) excursion rating, which allows not more than 96 consecutive hours or 360 hours total or 15 occurrences in a 1-year period.
What condition is the JL660A sold in, and what warranty applies?
The JL660A is sold new and factory-sealed. It is covered by the Network Devices Inc. 1-year warranty and a 30-day return policy.
