- Managed, rack-mountable, 48 x Smart Rate 100M/1/2.5/5GbE ports, 4 x SFP56 (1/10/25/50GbE) uplinks, Class 6 PoE (802.3bt) up to 60W/port, 2880W PoE budget, Layer 3
Overview
The HPE Aruba Networking CX 6300 Switch Series is a family of stackable Layer 3 switches for enterprise network access, aggregation and core, built on HPE's Gen7 ASIC architecture and the microservices-based AOS-CX operating system, with full dynamic routing and EVPN-VXLAN support in the base software. The JL659A is the 48-port HPE Smart Rate configuration of the CX 6300M: every access port negotiates up to 5GbE and carries Class 6 PoE, so it can feed multigigabit wireless access points over existing copper cabling. As a CX 6300M model it has two rear slots for hot-swappable power supplies and field-replaceable fan trays, so power can be made redundant and serviced in place. It ships with both fan trays installed.
Technical Details
The HPE Aruba Networking CX 6300M JL659A is a Layer 3 managed 1U rackmount switch with 48 HPE Smart Rate 100M/1G/2.5G/5G ports (100M full-duplex only) and 4x 1G/10G/25G/50G SFP56 uplinks, running AOS-CX. Switching capacity is 880 Gbps and the forwarding rate is 654 Mpps. Each port supports 802.3bt Class 6 PoE up to 60 W; the PoE budget is up to 2880 W with two 1600 W power supplies and lower with one, and no supply is included. It supports VSF stacking of up to 10 members with 200 Gbps of stacking bandwidth. It connects high-speed wireless access points, IP cameras and multigigabit endpoints at the campus access layer.
Best For
The JL659A suits dense campus access floors with multigigabit wireless access points and high-power powered devices. A PoE budget of up to 2880 W (with two 1600 W supplies) is suitable for mixed deployments of access points, IP cameras and IP phones; actual device counts depend on each powered device's power draw and on the supplies installed. Four SFP56 uplinks and 10-member VSF stacking carry traffic to the distribution layer.
Not suitable if:
- you need 10GBASE-T access ports, since these Smart Rate ports top out at 5GbE
- you need 90 W Class 8 PoE per port, since these ports are rated Class 6 at up to 60 W
- you need the switch to ship ready to power on, because the power supplies are ordered separately
- you need more than 10 switches in one stack, since VSF supports up to 10 members

FAQ
How much PoE does the HPE Aruba Networking CX 6300M JL659A provide?
The HPE Aruba Networking CX 6300M JL659A supports IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at and 802.3bt PoE up to 60 W per port (Class 6) on its 48 Smart Rate ports. The total budget depends on the power supplies, none of which ship with the switch. With a single supply it is 370 W (JL086A), 740 W (JL087A) or 1300 W (JL670A); with two 1600 W JL670A supplies it reaches up to 2880 W. The budget is shared, so the number of ports drawing full power depends on each device's draw.
What transceivers do the uplinks on the JL659A use?
The JL659A has four SFP56 uplink ports rated 1G/10G/25G/50G. HPE's footnote states that the 50G capability is for use with 50G DACs for both interconnect and VSF stacking, and 100 Mb transceivers are not supported in any SFP56 port. The 48 Smart Rate access ports are RJ-45 copper and take no pluggable optics. Check optic and DAC compatibility against HPE's CX 6300 QuickSpecs transceiver list. Transceivers are sold separately.
How many JL659A switches can be stacked?
Up to 10. The JL659A supports HPE Aruba Networking Virtual Switching Framework (VSF) stacking of up to 10 members in a chain or ring, with 200 Gbps of stacking bandwidth (400 Gbps at full duplex). VSF stacking is not supported on 1G ports. HPE allows modular CX 6300M and fixed CX 6300F models in the same stack, but the Layer 2-only CX 6300L models do not stack with them. As an alternative to a stack, two switches can form a Virtual Switching Extension (VSX) cluster.
What is the difference between the JL659A and the JL661A?
Both are 48-port CX 6300M PoE switches with four SFP56 uplinks, VSF stacking and the same JL086A, JL087A and JL670A power-supply options. The JL659A has HPE Smart Rate 100M/1G/2.5G/5G ports with 802.3bt Class 6 PoE up to 60 W, 880 Gbps and 654 Mpps, and ships with both fan trays. The JL661A has 10/100/1000BASE-T ports with PoE+ up to 30 W, 496 Gbps and 369 Mpps, a 1440 W budget with two 1600 W supplies, and ships with one fan tray. Choose the JL659A for multigigabit and higher-power PoE.
Does the JL659A need a license or subscription to operate?
No. The JL659A runs AOS-CX with all base features included, among them BGP, OSPF, RIP, VRRP, PIM, VXLAN and EVPN. HPE offers an optional, term-based CX Advanced Feature Pack that adds application-based and reflexive policies, MACsec extensions for the WAN and Drop Exceptions; it adds no routing capability. HPE Aruba Networking Central is a separate, optional management subscription, and HPE states that a Central Advanced subscription also enables the Advanced Feature Pack features.
Does the JL659A come with a power supply?
No. The JL659A has two field-replaceable, hot-swappable power-supply slots, and at least one power supply is required and ordered separately. Supported supplies are the JL086A (680 W), JL087A (1050 W) and JL670A (1600 W); the PoE budget rises with the supply chosen and with a second supply. Both fan trays come installed.
What condition is the JL659A sold in, and what warranty applies?
The JL659A is sold new and factory-sealed. It is covered by the Network Devices Inc. 1-year warranty and a 30-day return policy.
