The HPE Aruba Networking 3810M Series is an advanced Layer 3 switch line that HPE built for performance and resiliency in enterprise, SMB and branch networks, combining backplane stacking, hot-swappable power and line-rate 40GbE uplinks in a 1U chassis. The JL072A is the 48-port Gigabit data-only model with one uplink module slot, and it was one of the three 3810M models HPE listed for the 2-port 40GbE module, so 10GbE or 40GbE backhaul can be added as demand grows. One difference from the access-oriented 2930M is that full OSPF and IPv4 BGP are part of the standard feature set, which lets the JL072A route at an aggregation point as well as at the edge.

The HPE Aruba Networking 3810M JL072A is a Layer 3 managed 1U switch with 48 Gigabit Ethernet ports and one uplink module slot that supports up to 4 SFP+ or 2 40GbE ports. Switching capacity is 320 Gbps and forwarding rate is 190.5 Mpps. It carries no Power over Ethernet, so all 48 ports are data-only. OSPF, IPv4 BGP and policy-based routing are included with no software licensing. It supports backplane stacking with the JL084A 4-port stacking module; HPE does not publish the stack size or stacking bandwidth. It connects desktops, printers and downstream access switches in campus and branch networks.
Best For
The JL072A suits campus and branch deployments that need dense Gigabit copper for non-powered endpoints together with full OSPF and IPv4 BGP at a collapsed-core or aggregation point. Its uplink slot adds 10GbE SFP+ or 40GbE QSFP+ backhaul, and backplane stacking with nonstop switching and routing keeps traffic moving through a member failover.
Not suitable if:
- you need to power access points, IP phones or IP cameras, since this model has no Power over Ethernet
- you need dense 10G fiber ports, since the 48 access ports are Gigabit copper and SFP+ comes only from the uplink module
- you need multigigabit access ports, since all 48 access ports are Gigabit
- you need a DIN-rail or hardened industrial switch, since this is a 1U rack-mount switch rated 0 to 45 °C

Does the HPE Aruba Networking 3810M JL072A support PoE?
No. The HPE Aruba Networking 3810M JL072A is a data-only switch: HPE lists its PoE power as N/A, so none of its 48 Gigabit ports can power access points, IP phones or IP cameras. An HPE Smart Rate uplink module installed in it also receives no PoE power. In the 3810M family, the 48-port PoE+ counterpart is the 3810M 48G PoE+ 1-slot Switch, JL074A, which HPE paired with the higher-wattage JL086A or JL087A power supplies.
What uplink modules and transceivers does the JL072A use?
The JL072A has one uplink module slot, which ships empty and supports a maximum of 4 SFP+ or 2 40GbE ports. HPE listed the JL083A 4-port 100M/1G/10G SFP+ MACsec module, the JL079A 2-port 40GbE QSFP+ module (HPE offered it only on the JL072A, JL074A and JL076A), the JL078A 1-port 40GbE QSFP+ module, and the JL081A 4-port HPE Smart Rate module for it; the Smart Rate module gets no PoE on this switch. The 48 RJ-45 ports take no transceivers. Transceivers are sold separately.
Can the JL072A be stacked?
Yes. The JL072A supports backplane stacking through the JL084A 3810M 4-port Stacking Module, which takes one to four stacking cables (J9578A 0.5 m, J9665A 1 m or J9579A 3 m). HPE sold the module and cables separately. In a stack, nonstop switching and routing keeps traffic forwarding when the backup member becomes the commander during a failover. HPE's 3810M QuickSpecs do not state the maximum number of stack members or the stacking bandwidth, so plan the stack size against HPE's current stacking documentation.
Does the JL072A support BGP?
Yes. The JL072A includes IPv4 BGP along with OSPFv2 and OSPFv3, RIPv1, RIPv2 and RIPng, static routing, policy-based routing, VRRP, and PIM sparse and dense mode multicast routing, with a 10,000-entry IPv4 routing table. HPE states that OSPF, IPv6, IPv4 BGP, dynamic segmentation, QoS and policy-based routing are included with no software licensing, so no feature tier gates these protocols.
What is the difference between the JL072A and the JL075A?
Both are data-only 3810M switches with the same routing feature set and backplane stacking. Differences documented by HPE include: the JL072A has 48 Gigabit RJ-45 ports and one uplink module slot (up to 4 SFP+ or 2 40GbE), 320 Gbps of switching capacity and a 190.5 Mpps forwarding rate; the JL075A has 16 fixed 1G/10G SFP+ ports and two module slots (up to 8 SFP+ or 2 40GbE), 480 Gbps and 285.7 Mpps. Only the JL072A takes the 2-port 40GbE module. Choose the JL072A for copper endpoints.
Is the JL072A end of sale?
Yes. HPE (Aruba) announced the End of Sale of the 3810 switches on November 9, 2022. The End of Sale date was June 30, 2023, and the End of Support Life date, after which HPE no longer supports the product, is June 30, 2028. The notice lists the JL663A, Aruba 6300M 48G 4SFP56 Switch, as the recommended replacement for the JL072A.
Does the JL072A come with a power supply?
No. The JL072A has two power supply slots and ships without a power supply; one is required. HPE listed only the JL085A X371 12VDC 250W 100-240VAC power supply for this model, and the higher-wattage JL086A and JL087A supplies only for the PoE models. A second JL085A adds hot-swappable redundancy, and HPE recommends matching supplies for full redundancy.
