Overview

The HPE Aruba Networking 5400R zl2 Series is HPE's modular campus switch family, built on the ProVision ASIC with a 2 Tbps crossbar switching fabric, hitless failover, and VSF and Fast Software Upgrade with v3 zl2 modules. The J9822A is the twelve-slot 7U chassis order code, with twice the module slots and switching capacity of the six-slot 5406R zl2: it ships with one management module and one fan tray, and the I/O modules, power supplies and optics are chosen per site. Its four power supply slots and an optional second management module let availability be designed in.

Technical Details

The HPE Aruba Networking 5412R zl2 J9822A is a Layer 3 managed modular switch chassis with twelve open module slots in 7U, running AOS-S and sold bare, without I/O modules or power supplies. Switching capacity is 1920 Gbps and forwarding rate is 1142.8 Mpps. The chassis has no ports or PoE of its own; ports and PoE+ come from the zl2 modules and PoE+ zl2 power supplies installed, and HPE publishes no chassis PoE budget. Achievable ports, PoE and features depend on the modules and power supplies installed. Fully populated, it supports up to 288 10/100/1000, 96 SFP+ or 24 40GbE ports. With v3 zl2 modules it supports VSF with two chassis. It aggregates downstream access switches.

Best For

The J9822A suits larger campus core and distribution layers that aggregate many downstream access switches and need twelve module slots, up to 96 SFP+ or 24 40GbE ports in 7U. OSPF, IPv4 BGP and policy-based routing (v2 or later modules) come with no software licensing required. PoE+ for access points and cameras is possible with PoE+ zl2 modules and power supplies, sized per configuration.

Not suitable if:

  • you need a switch with built-in ports out of the box, since this bare chassis ships without I/O modules or power supplies
  • you need only a few module slots in a small footprint, since this is a 7U twelve-slot chassis
  • you need to join more than two switches into one logical device, because VSF, with v3 zl2 modules, pairs two chassis
  • you need a compact fixed-configuration switch for a wiring closet, since this is a modular chassis

FAQ

What is included with the HPE Aruba Networking 5412R zl2 J9822A?

The HPE Aruba Networking 5412R zl2 J9822A is a bare chassis. HPE lists one J9827A 5400R zl2 Management Module and one fan tray, the J9832A, as included; it does not come with a power supply, and its twelve module slots ship empty. It has four power supply slots, two minimum required, taking the J9828A 700W, J9829A 1100W or J9830B 2750W PoE+ zl2 supplies. A second management module is optional. Rack installation requires the J9852A X450 4U/7U rack mount kit.

Does the J9822A support PoE?

Not by itself. The J9822A chassis has no ports of its own, so PoE+ at up to 30 W per port comes from PoE+ zl2 I/O modules powered by the PoE+ zl2 power supplies (J9828A, J9829A or J9830B). HPE does not publish a PoE budget for the chassis or for each power-supply combination, and notes additional installation requirements when more than four power cords are installed in a 5412R zl2 chassis. Size the supplies against the modules and powered devices planned.

What modules and transceivers does the J9822A use?

The J9822A chassis has no ports of its own, so transceivers go into the v3 zl2 I/O modules installed in its slots, such as the J9993A 8-port 1G/10GbE SFP+, the J9990A 20-port PoE+ with 4 SFP+, the J9988A 24-port 1GbE SFP or the J9996A 2-port 40GbE QSFP+ module. HPE states that supported 1G SFP transceivers are revision B or later (for example J8177C), and that installing the J8177C lowers the chassis operating range to 0 to 40 °C. Modules are sold separately. Transceivers are sold separately.

Can the J9822A be stacked?

Yes. The J9822A supports HPE Aruba Networking Virtual Switching Framework (VSF), which joins two 5400R zl2 switches into one virtual resilient switch; devices attach to the pair with standard LACP. HPE's QuickSpecs list v3 zl2 modules as a requirement in the VSF entry, and Fast Software Upgrade, which upgrades the VSF members in sequence to cut downtime to a few seconds, also requires v3 modules. HPE does not publish a VSF link bandwidth figure.

Does the J9822A support BGP?

Yes. The J9822A running AOS-S supports IPv4 BGP, OSPFv2 and OSPFv3, RIPv1, RIPv2 and RIPng, static routing, VRRP, and PIM sparse and dense mode multicast routing, with a 10,000-entry IPv4 routing table. Policy-based routing requires v2 or higher modules. HPE states that the feature set, including OSPF, IPv6, IPv4 BGP and policy-based routing, comes with no software licensing required.

What is the difference between the J9822A and the J9821A?

Both are bare 5400R zl2 chassis with a management module and fan tray included and no I/O modules or power supplies. Differences documented by HPE include: the J9822A (5412R zl2) has twelve module slots in 7U, 1920 Gbps of switching capacity, a 1142.8 Mpps forwarding rate and four power supply slots (two minimum); the J9821A (5406R zl2) has six slots in 4U, 960 Gbps, 571.4 Mpps and two power supply slots (one minimum). Choose the J9822A when the port plan needs more than six modules.

What condition is the J9822A sold in, and what warranty applies?

The J9822A is sold new and factory-sealed. It is covered by the Network Devices Inc. 1-year warranty and a 30-day return policy.
